The conclusion of this war marked the beginning of a renewed period of neutrality for the nation of Denmark. With this work, Nielsen has given winds a unique gem that continues to enthrall audiences to this day.Ĭarl Nielsen was born to a poor family in Denmark in 1865 the year following the end of the Second Schleswig War in which the Danish people were forced to give Schleswig, Holstein, and Saxe-Lauenburg to Prussia and Austria. Such acclaim is due largely to the vigor of the melodic material, the broad color palette, the rhythmic devices employed, the solo passages, and the harmonic strength of each movement. The quintet of Carl Nielsen is perhaps the greatest of these works. Several pieces in the wind quintet repertoire stand out as masterworks of the chamber music genre.
